Our Place in the Universe

Every so often, from time to time, I get great encouragement, comfort, succor, and cheer from the reminders that make the rounds about how earth is situated in a very insignificant remote outpost of our galaxy. I love this reminder. I love the reminder of the perspective it gives us. For only a complete and total fool would assume or presume some kind of humanity-centric significance afforded us by a master of such a galaxy in existence in such a universe! And the universe is well versed. Believe me. And old.

The encouragement, comfort, succor, and cheer particularly apply to the great delusion of those who rely upon such a chosen significance of special destiny, privilege and, hence, a cornucopia of arrogantly assumed stewardship-type responsibility and ownership. These people are engaged in a fear-driven dead desperation of panic-grasping at an assurance in delusion of centrality. There is no Brownist, no puritan, no Evangelist, no “Christian” “Nationalist” able to stand upon any firm ground at all in their belief system, much less in that which they condemn in the perspective of the desperately hopeful gaze into the counter-factual fairy-tale countenance of this belief system.

But I don’t want to be bitter. Or to sound bitter. Or even to be understood as bitter, for that matter. Though the importance in significance of how I am understood is the least of all that matters. I love the great encouragement, comfort, succor, and cheer that a good perspective brings! I’ll leave it at that. I’m glad that the reminders make the rounds from time to time.

However, this time, I was thinking about the unimaginable perspective of our place in an infinite universe. Like the contemplation of any one life – no matter how long blissful or how long dreadful, painful and suffering – within the context of eternity of time:  the life could not be located on any pictorial graph of that eternal timeline.  It simply couldn’t register on something that unimaginably vast. So much like this insignificance of a lifetime and the futile attempts to make it register or count in the eternal picture is the attempt to place any inhabitable or uninhabitable globe or orb or other configuration of space debris within this infinite system as an outpost. There are no such outposts in the infinite universe. Each and every point in said infinite universe can be centric: thought of and known as the center. Or not. Decidedly and undoubtedly not. It is only in our galaxy that we are a remote insignificant outpost. In our infinite universe we are of a Schrödinger’s nature. We don’t exist to the same extent that we exist. We don’t register to the same extent that we do register. We can be identified and found to the same extent that we can’t be identified and/or found. How brilliantly insignificant is that!? Chosen nation indeed.
